How Weather Affects a Bike Lock, and What It Doesn’t Change

We don't test locks ourselves, so this isn't a performance test. It's a plain explanation of how weather interacts with common lock mechanisms, and why none of it changes the Sold Secure rating your insurer actually checks.

What cold and wet weather can do to a lock mechanism

Keyed cylinder locks rely on small moving pins, and moisture that gets into the keyway can freeze in cold weather, making the key hard or impossible to turn until it thaws. This is a well-known issue with exposed keyways generally, not specific to bike locks, and it's a functional nuisance rather than a security weakness: a frozen lock is harder to use, not easier to defeat.

Combination locks avoid the keyway-freezing issue but can suffer if water works into the dial mechanism and then corrodes internal contacts over a long period, particularly on cheaper, less sealed units.

Surface corrosion versus structural weakening

Chain and cable locks are typically hardened steel, sometimes with a fabric or plastic sleeve. Surface rust on an exposed shackle or chain link is common with outdoor use and is largely cosmetic on genuinely hardened steel: the tempered core that Sold Secure attack-tests is not the thin surface layer that discolours first. That said, a lock that's been left wet for a long period and shows heavy pitting or a shackle that no longer moves freely is worth replacing on general reliability grounds, independent of its rating.

UV and rubber or plastic coatings

Many locks use a rubber or plastic sleeve over the shackle or chain to protect paintwork and add grip. Prolonged UV exposure can make these coatings stiffen, crack, or perish over time, the same way most outdoor plastics and rubbers do. That's a cosmetic and comfort issue with the coating, not a change to the metal core underneath, which is what actually resists an attack.

What this means for your insurance cover

Weather resistance is not a factor in any UK cycle insurer's lock requirement that we have verified. What matters for a claim is the lock's Sold Secure rating and, for many insurers, the bike's insured value, exactly as covered on cross-insurer lock requirements. A lock that has weathered badly enough to stop functioning properly is a practical reason to replace it, but weathering itself does not change what your policy requires.

Does a weatherproof bike lock have a higher Sold Secure rating?
Not necessarily. Sold Secure grades a lock on resistance to attack methods, cutting, drilling, leverage, picking, not on weather resistance. A lock can be well weatherproofed and still carry a low Sold Secure tier, or be weather-vulnerable and still carry a high one. Always check the actual rating rather than assuming weatherproofing implies a stronger grade.
Will my insurer accept a lock that has visible surface rust?
We have not found any UK insurer whose published wording makes an exception for a rusted or corroded lock, or whose lock condition depends on cosmetic weathering rather than the Sold Secure rating itself. If a lock is functionally failing, jamming, or its shackle no longer closes properly, treat that as a reason to replace it regardless of what your policy says about ratings.
