Kryptonite Series 2 – A Fantastic Budget Bicycle Lock
- Could offer more in the way of protection.
- Some issues with first using the lock.
Features: Hardened Steel – Patent Pending Double Deadbolt Design – Disc Style Cylinder – 1.66kg – 10.2cm x 22.9cm
Having had the opportunity to test the first version of the Kryptonite Series 2 KryptoLok, we weren’t overly impressed. It was a good model, but there were significant improvements to be made, and thankfully with this version, the Series 2 KryptoLok is absolutely fantastic for a budget bicycle lock.
In order to give you a better idea as to whether or not this bike lock will meet your needs, we have tested the newer version so that we could offer a thorough review. Please read on below for our honest verdict on the Kryptonite Series 2 KryptoLok.
The Design of the Kryptonite Series 2
The updated version of the Kryptonite Series 2 Lock offers impressive levels of security, especially given the fact that it is a budget level lock. It is constructed from hardened steel with a pick and drill resistant disc style cylinder, so even the most skilled thieves are going to have a hard time stealing your bike.
Whilst the steel is hardened, it isn’t as protective as some of the more expensive locks in the Kryptonite range, but it is still very well constructed for the price range. The one thing that we did miss with this model is the patent pending double deadbolt. However, the lock itself still offers high levels of security.
There is a nice addition with this particular model; it comes with a 4m cable which allows you to further tie the bike to railings or a dedicated bike space. Although this doesn’t really offer much in the way of security as it is easily cut through, it is good in the sense that it will protect your bike from getting bashed around and potentially damaged.
We have to say that in comparison to some of the more expensive Kryptonite locks on the market, we really liked the design of this one. One of the issues that we had with certain models is the bright orange colour. With this one, there are only parts of the lock which are orange; the rest is in a nice black and chrome colour which doesn’t really stand out so it won’t draw attention to your bike.
One of the issues that we had with some of the other Kryptonite locks on the market is that some of them are quite heavy which could potentially cause issues with portability. At just 1.66kg, the Kryptonite Series 2 Lock is surprisingly lightweight which we really liked.
The dimensions for this lock are 10.2cm x 22.9cm which is easily small enough to fit into most cycling backpacks without any issues. Although this is a lightweight model, it is important to keep in mind that it is made out of hardened steel, so it is going to feel a little heavier to some of the cheaper designs on the market at the moment.
Using the Kryptonite Series 2 Lock
We tried out this lock on several different occasions to see how easy it was to use. We have to say that this is where we felt a little frustrated with the Kryptonite Series 2 Lock. However, this isn’t a comment on the lock itself, more on the instructions.
You will find that in order to fasten your bike to railings, you need to keep the key in the lock once it has been unlocked before you can relock it. This isn’t a problem, but it isn’t something that we’ve encountered before with bicycle locks that we have tried out, so it is definitely worth keeping in mind.
As well as this, it is also worth noting that you have to register the two keys that are provided with the lock. This is definitely a good thing, because by registering the keys with Kryptonite, you will be provided with a replacement should you be unfortunate enough to lose both keys. This could save a fortune in locksmith fees.
Overall, we have to say that we were really pleasantly surprised by the Kryptonite Series 2 Lock. For the price that you can expect to pay, we really expected it to perform at a much lower level than it did. It is constructed from quality materials, has a very secure lock and comes with some nice extras so it is more than worth the money that you can expect to pay. We definitely recommend it.
