- Not secure enough to be used on its own.
Features: Multiple Lengths Available – Braided Steel Cable – Durable Vinyl Coating – Compatible With Most Kryptonite Locks
If you use your bike for your daily commute, then one thing that you are definitely going to need to invest in is some sort of bike lock. If you are on a tight budget, then your best option is probably going to be a cable lock. There are plenty on the market to choose from, but you need to buy one from a reputable brand.
Because of this, we have decided to test and review the Kryptonite KryptoFlex. Kryptonite has been producing bike locks since the early 1970’s and are known for their high performance products, so we definitely expected good things from this cable lock. Please read on below to see how we thought the lock performed.
The Design of the Kryptonite KryptoFlex
In terms of the design of any cable lock, you are not going to get anything fancy. Cable locks are designed to be basic yet functional. However, it is worth noting that the Kryptonite KryptoFlex certainly looks and feels like a high quality piece of equipment.
The inside of the cable loop itself is constructed out of braided steel cable. Research has shown that braided steel is far safer and more durable than twisted steel, so this definitely adds plus points in terms of the security that this cable lock offers. Covering the steel cable is weatherproof vinyl, so you never have to worry about the elements compromising security.
There are 4 different size options to choose from – 30ft, 7ft, 4ft and 2.5ft (which has a 4mm diameter cable rather than 10mm), so you can choose the perfect length for your needs. If you are going to be securing more than one bike then go for the bigger options. After having a thorough look at the cable, we have to say that we were more than satisfied regarding the durability.
The Portability of the Kryptonite KryptoFlex
We have to say that there is nothing that we can complain about in terms of the portability of the Kryptonite KryptoFlex bike lock. It is incredibly lightweight for a start, so you will have no issues carrying it around in a backpack or a saddle bag on your rides. Even though it is constructed from braided steel cable, it is still quite lightweight in comparison to some of the others on the market.
The one thing that we really liked about this cable lock is the looped ends which make carrying your cable lock so much easier. If portability is important to you, then this is the cable lock for you, without a doubt.
There are a few things that we should definitely mention regarding the use of this particular cable lock. First of all, if you are just looking for a basic cable lock that will allow you to secure your bike whilst you quickly run into the shop, then this fits the bill.
However, if you are planning on using this lock as an option for securing your bike when you are away from it for longer periods of time, especially in high risk areas, then there are some other precautions that you should take. The best thing that you can do is to combine using the Kryptonite KryptoFlex with either a D lock or a U lock from the Kryptonite range. This will offer you far higher levels of security and make it far less likely that you will be targeted by thieves.
Overall, we have to say that for a budget cable lock; this one from Kryptonite is great. It is very strong and durable, weather resistant, easy to use, and most importantly, compatible with most of the hardier locks in the Kryptonite range. It comes highly recommended from us.
