Considering we have tested and reviewed numerous Kryptonite bike locks, it only seemed fair that we test out their disc lock – a unique design geared towards motorbike and scooter users. If you live in a particularly high risk area, especially a city, then it is very important that you do everything that you can in order to protect your bike from thieves.

One of the best ways to do this is with a disc lock. For the purpose of our review, we have decided to test out the Kryptonite Disc Lock so that we can give our thorough verdict. Please read on below to see if this is the right type of lock for you.

The Design of the Kryptonite Disc Lock

Because we have reviewed so many Kryptonite bicycle locks, we weren’t really sure what to expect with their motorcycle lock. The design is completely different from anything that we have tried out so far. This is a stapler style disc lock which has not only been reinforced once, but twice. This dual protection completely immobilises the wheel of your bike so that it cannot be rolled away by thieves.

At5.5mm, the pin diameter of the Kryptonite Disc Lock is small enough for smaller holes which again, offers another layer of security. Upon taking a thorough look over the design, one thing that we can definitely say is that it is very clear that a lot of thought has gone into the level of security and it is also clear to see that high quality materials have been used in the construction.

One thing that we have noted in previous reviews of Kryptonite locks is the fact that some of them may attract thieves. In this case, the yellow colour is more likely to deter them. With this lock, it is clear to see when it has been applied to the wheel discs of your motorbike. It is also very obvious that removing it is going to be hard work, which may well put thieves off even attempting it.

The Portability of the Kryptonite Disc Lock

This is where we were actually really surprised. Given the design of the Kryptonite Disc Lock, we originally expected to have issues with portability. Fortunately, this really wasn’t the case. At just 8x3x3cm, the lock is easily small enough to fit into a backpack or a saddle bag with no issues at all.

It is also worth noting that with this lock from Kryptonite, you are provided with a handy carry case which has a belt attachment to make carrying it even easier. It was the weight that really surprised us. With a lot of the Kryptonite locks that we have tried, the one issue that we have run into is that they do tend to be quite heavy. At just 703g, this disc lock is lightweight and highly portable. You wouldn’t even notice it in a backpack.

Using the Kryptonite Disc Lock

Fitting the Kryptonite Disc Lock was much simpler than we had anticipated. Due to the smaller pins, you are able to fit the lock really tightly to the brake discs. What we found is that this made it virtually impossible to fit any kind of tools in which could potentially be used to assist in the theft of the bike. Removing the disc lock was just as easy.

One thing that we did notice, however, is that the yellow paint does come off quite easily and only after a few uses. We found that the paint would end up on the brake discs which whilst not necessarily a problem, it is certainly a little annoying.

Overall, this is a great product for those wanting to protect their motorcycle. It is very affordable, very well made and very easy to use. We had no problems securing it and removing it again and would definitely recommend it as a budget disc lock that outperforms its price tag.
