These days, bikes are significantly more expensive than they once were. This is especially true of specialist bikes that are designed for different purposes. It is because of this that you will want to do whatever you can to protect your bike from theft or damage when you are not around.
Generally, the best way to do this is with the help of a high-quality bike lock. There are plenty of different types available and plenty of very reputable brands on the market, but the brand that we have chosen to focus on today is Kryptonite.
Kryptonite has been manufacturing bike locks for a number of years now and they have an incredibly good reputation among cyclists. They have a huge range of different locks on the market, so choosing the right one for your needs can be a difficult process.
In order to help you choose the right bike lock for you, we have tested and reviewed some of our favourite Kryptonite bike locks. Please read on below for our verdict on the best Kryptonite bike locks available right now.
3. Kryptonite Evolution 4 Integrated Chain Bicycle Lock
Features: 10mm Chain – 160cm Length – Evolution Series 4 Lock Head – Sold Secure Gold Standard – 4.4kg
- Quite expensive for a chain lock.
- Will need to be used with a D lock or a U lock.
The Design of the Kryptonite Evolution 4 Integrated Chain Bicycle Lock
The design of this bike lock is what first caught our attention. It looks very stylish and is not bright enough to draw too much attention to it. With a 10mm thick chain, this lock feels very robust. The chain itself is covered in a vinyl sleeve which is weatherproof; another nice additional touch.
The lock itself is probably the best thing about the design of this one. This chain lock from Kryptonite features their Evolution Series 4 Lock Head which has been seen on previous models and not only proven to be very popular, but also very secure.
Using the Kryptonite Evolution 4 Integrated Chain Bicycle Lock
We encountered absolutely no issues when using this chain lock. For short commutes where you are not leaving your bike for extended periods of time, this chain lock is plenty secure enough on its own. However, if you are going to be leaving your bike for longer periods of time then we would definitely recommend combining the chain lock with a U lock or D lock for extra security.
The Portability of the Kryptonite Evolution 4 Integrated Chain Bicycle Lock
In terms of weight, this bike lock is heavy; there is no getting away from that. At 4.4kg, it is significantly heavier than some of the other options that are available at the moment. However, we did find that placing the lock in a backpack made carrying it quite easy. We did notice the extra weight, but not enough that it would cause any problems. Overall, this chain lock is a winner.
2. Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Bicycle Chain and New York Disc Bike Lock
- Incredibly secure chain lock.
- Very durable material.
- Multiple protective features.
- The chain is very heavy.
The Design of the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Bicycle Chain and New York Disc Bike Lock
The design of this particular chain and disc bike lock is very impressive. Upon first glance, we were really pleased with the addition of the disc lock. This not only looks great, but it also adds an extra layer of protection. The chain itself is made from hardened manganese steel which is far more durable than a lot of the other options on the market at the moment.
As well as this, there is a protective nylon cover over the chain itself which increases the lifespan of the chain as it protects it from the elements. One other feature that we really liked is the cylinder protection system on the disc lock. This protects from drill and pick attacks. Overall, we were very impressed with the design.
Using the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Bicycle Chain and New York Disc Bike Lock
Upon first use, we did struggle a little. However, this is likely due to the fact that this is a combo lock rather than your standard chain lock which most people are used to. Once we figured out how everything worked, we had no problems using it at all.
Once the lock is fastened, it is obvious that it is going nowhere; it feels very secure indeed. A nice addition was the LED blue light on the keys. We found this very useful when using the lock during the evening. We suspect that it could be quite difficult trying to use the lock in the dark without it.
The Portability of the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Bicycle Chain and New York Disc Bike Lock
In terms of portability, this one is very heavy indeed. At 5kg, don’t expect something that you can easily carry in a saddle bag. However, in a backpack, we didn’t really notice the extra weight all that much. This wouldn’t be an ideal lock for long bike rides, but for those who commute daily, it would be perfect, if you are looking for a highly secure bike lock that is built to last then this is definitely an option to consider.
1. Kryptonite New York U-Lock
- Nice, simple U lock design.
- Very easy to use.
- Feels solid.
- Very durable design.
- Quite expensive.
The Design of the Kryptonite New York U-Lock
The design of this particular bike lock is fairly common from Kryptonite and we have seen it on a few different models thus far and been impressed. We have to say that we were even more impressed with the Kryptonite New York U-Lock. It has all of the features that we’ve come to know and love, but with some drastic improvements.
First of all, there is the material of the shackle itself. Rather than the standard hardened steel that we have come to expect, this bike lock is made from hardened Kryptonium which is significantly stronger and this is very obvious with a closer look at the lock. As well as this there is the hardened double deadbolt design which is far more secure.
Using the Kryptonite New York U-Lock
As we expected, we encountered no issues at all when using this lock. The shackle clicks nicely when it is locked, and a quick pull on the secured lock makes it very clear that it is tightly fastened. As we have come to expect with Kryptonite locks, there are three keys provided, one of which has an LED light for dark evenings.
The most appealing thing about this lock is how simple it is to use. It is a very basic design, but one that is highly effective and very secure. The yellow cross bar may be a little bright for some, but this all comes down to personal preference.
The Portability of the Kryptonite New York U-Lock
In terms of portability, the Kryptonite New York U-Lock is great. It comes in at around 2kg, so it is easily light enough to carry in a backpack, or even fastened to the frame of your bike. Alternatively, you could use a mount to properly fasten it to your bike. With all of the fantastic features and the fact that this is so lightweight, the New York from Kryptonite takes our top spot today.
Hopefully, you are now able to choose the best Kryptonite lock for your needs and you are able to keep your bike safe and secure.
